So, I'm leaving Rio behind... And with a heavy heart.
Yeah, its gorgeous and yes, somewhat dangerous. Made it through without the joy of getting mugged, but met quite a few people who did.
Here's some tips about how to get the most out of visiting Rio.
If you go during Carnaval:
- Avoid the parties and clubs you have to pay for and stick with the Banda's - the outdoor street parties and parades. There a lot more fun and you'll meet a lot more
- Definately go to the Sambadromo, though heard a promising report that its well worth it to wait and see the parade of champions rather than the competition. The Parade of Champions is apparently much cheaper (and a tad shorter). The food in the stadium is horrible, be sure to eat ahead of time.
- Book accomodation as far in advance as possible. Explore as much as possible. If you're gay, Inpanema is definately the place to be - the Hotel Vermont is fine but better deals and accomodations may be available at Inpanema Plaza.
In general:
- Yeah, you have to be smart about thievery and robbers. Don't wear jewelry (Paul had a cheap gold chain snatched right off his neck during the banda) and only take out the amount of money you want to spend. Aside from that, try not to worry about it too much, otherwise it will impact your good time. Oh - I did have plenty of things ripped off at the beach, but just sorangs and stuff, don't take anything out that you aren't afraid to loose.
- Definately hit the Churrascarias - In Inpanema, the Porkcao is more expensive but has a really great salad/sushi bar. While the less expensive Curratao, has less impressive salad/sushi bar but much better meats.
- Explore the city: it has great architecture and fabulous museums. The ferry trip to Niteroi to see the MAC is well worth it. The beach in Inpanema is gorgeous but there is so much more. Take the tram to Santa Teresa, Visit Centro and especially cinelandia.
- Drink caparinha's - and try it with different fruits - don't drink it with Vodka - Cachaca is much better.
There's probably some other things to say as well! I'll miss Rio. Oh and check out the voice on the loudspeaker announcing flights in the International Airport. Very suave!
